Recap: Navy vs. Western Ky

Annapolis, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Brandon Doughty passed for 387 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and scored once more on the ground as his Western Kentucky Hilltoppers outlasted the Navy Midshipmen, 36-27, in a non-conference bout at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

Doughty completed 38-of-54 pass attempts, and also tossed an interception for Western Kentucky (2-2). Leon Allen carried the ball a team-high 17 times for 102 yards, and Jared Dangerfield pulled in seven receptions for 74 yards and a score in the win.

Keenan Reynolds hit on 3-of-14 passing for 55 yards with an interception, but ran for 121 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries for Navy (2-3). Noah Copeland carried the ball just five times for the Midshipmen, but gained 104 yards with a touchdown in the loss.

Western Kentucky struck first on a 37-yard field goal by Garrett Schwettman with 11:41 remaining in the first quarter. The Hilltoppers had the 3-0 advantage until Reynolds carried the ball into the end zone from four yards out for Navy. The Midshipmen took the 7-3 lead with 2:05 left in the period.

Schwettman converted his second field goal attempt with 13:03 to play in the second quarter, slicing Navy's lead to 7-6.

Copeland increased Navy's lead on a 41-yard touchdown run just a few minutes later. The Midshipmen took the 14-6 advantage with 10:58 to play in the first half.

Western Kentucky's offense finally got to the end zone thanks to Doughty's 13- yard pass hookup with Willie McNeal. The Hilltoppers trailed by one, 14-13, with 9:32 to play in the second quarter.

It was Toneo Gulley's turn to run in a score for Navy, taking a handoff 19 yards to the end zone with 11:44 to play in the third.

Not even two minutes later, Doughty found Dangerfield on a 31-yard scoring strike to slice Navy's lead to 21-19 with 9:46 to play in the frame. The touchdown pass capped a six-play, 88-yard drive.

WKU took its first lead since the first score of the game with a Schwettman 33-yard field goal with 26 seconds left to play in the third.

Doughty then punched in a one-yard touchdown run with 6:52 to play in the contest, ending a 15-play, 91-yard drive. The score gave Western Kentucky a 29-21 lead.

Reynolds wasn't about to let the game slip away, though. He took a snap and carried the ball two yards into the end zone - his second rushing touchdown of the day - to cut WKU's advantage to 29-27 with 4:31 to play.

The Hilltoppers sealed the game when Wonderful Terry intercepted Reynolds and returned it 43 yards for a touchdown to give WKU the 36-27 edge with 45 seconds to play.

Navy had the decided edge in rushing yards, 412-164, while the Hilltoppers held the advantage in passing yards, 387-55, and in total offensive yards, 551-467. WKU held Navy to a 2-of-11 third-down conversion rate, and registered four sacks on Reynolds in the win.
