Recap: Army vs. Ball State
West Point, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Larry Dixon ran for a game-high 188 yards on 28 carries, and the Army Black Knights knocked off Ball State, 33-24, in non-conference action at Michie Stadium.
Angel Santiago ran for 89 yards and a touchdown, while A.J. Schurr scored twice on the ground to help the Black Knights (2-3) snap a three-game slide.
Jahwan Edwards carried 12 times for 142 yards and two TDs for the Cardinals (1-4) who suffered their fourth straight loss despite having two weeks to prepare for Army's option game.
Army struck first after Chris Carnegie forced and recovered a fumble on Ball State's second offensive play. Schurr capitalized on the Black Knights' ensuing possession with a 1-yard touchdown plunge less than four minutes into the game.
Ball State evened the score at 7-7 on a 56-yard TD burst by Edwards midway through the first quarter.
But Army answered right back with a six-play scoring drive, which Schurr finished off with another 1-yard touchdown run to make it a 14-7 game.
The second quarter featured field goals of 43 and 21 yards by Black Knights kicker Daniel Grochowski, and a 22-yarder from Ball State's Scott Secor, as Army took a 20-10 halftime lead into the locker room.
The Black Knights produced the only points of the third quarter on a 9-yard run by Aaron Kemper to make it a 27-10 game.
However, the Cardinals made things interesting with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown drives that both lasted nine plays and covered more than 70 yards. The first of those scores came on a 6-yard run by Edwards, then Ozzie Mann found Dylan Curry for a 6-yard TD to trim the margin to 27-24 with 8:35 to play in regulation.
But the Black Knights responded with a clock-killing drive of their own, and Santiago finished it off with an 11-yard TD scamper to account for the final margin.
Army held a 473-330 advantage in total offense, with 449 of those yards coming on the ground.Game Notes
