Recap: Pittsburgh vs. Akron
Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Kyle Pohl threw for 193 yards and a touchdown, and Cody Grice ran in a pair of scores as the Akron Zips defeated the Pittsburgh Panthers, 21-10, in a non-conference upset at Heinz Field Saturday.
Pohl connected on 15-of-29 passing in the game, and also threw and interception in the win for Akron (2-2). Conor Hundley led the Zips in rushing, gaining 148 yards - a game-high - on 19 carries.
Chad Voytik completed 20-of-34 passing for 220 yards, a touchdown and an interception for Pittsburgh (3-2). James Conner carried the ball a game-high 25 times, gaining 92 yards in the loss.
It took almost a full two quarters for either side to get on the board, but finally Pittsburgh found the end zone with 4:28 to play in the half when Voytik found Manasseh Garner for an eight-yard scoring completion that capped a 10-play drive.
Akron answered right back, capping a three-play drive with a 52-yard touchdown completion from Pohl to Mykel Traylor-Bennett. The Zips knotted the score at seven apiece with 3:40 to go in the first half.
Akron took a 14-7 lead in the early stages of the third quarter when Grice carried the ball one yard for his first score with 12:13 remaining in the period.
Pittsburgh cut into Akron's lead midway through the third quarter when Chris Blewitt converted a 34-yard field goal attempt. With 6:15 remaining in the third, the Panthers still found themselves trailing, 14-10.
At the start of the fourth quarter, Grice once again found the end zone, this time from two yards out for Akron, giving the Zips the 21-10 lead with 12:20 to play. His touchdown run would prove to be the last score of the game.
Pittsburgh's 129 team rushing yards is the lowest total in the category this season (3.2 average yards per rush). The Zips held the Panthers to a 5-of-16 third-down conversion rate in the contest.Game Notes
