Recap: Duke vs. Kansas
Durham, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Freshman running back Shaun Wilson broke the single-game Duke rushing record as he compiled 245 yards and three touchdowns on the ground as the Duke Blue Devils defeated the Kansas Jayhawks, 41-3, in a non-conference battle at Wallace Wade Stadium.
Wilson carried the ball a team-high 12 times for Duke (3-0). Anthony Boone connected on 19-of-33 passing for 180 yards and two touchdowns. Just as important, the Blue Devils defense held the opposition to just 95 passing yards in the tilt.
The Jayhawks (1-1) extended their road losing streak to 25 straight. Montell Cozart threw for 89 yards on 11-of-27 passing with two interceptions in the loss. Despite the woes through the air, Corey Avery gained 87 yards on the ground to lead Kansas.
Duke jumped out to a 7-0 lead when Boone connected on a 36-yard touchdown pass to Max McCaffrey. On the Blue Devils' next drive, Ross Martin kicked a 20- yard field goal with 7:13 left to play in the first quarter.
After holding Kansas to a three-and-out, Wilson broke off a 69-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 17-0 with just under six minutes to play in the first quarter.
Kansas finally got on the board when Matthew Wyman kicked a 34-yard field goal to bring the score to 17-3 with 2:18 left to play in the first quarter.
Martin capped off a five-play drive when he connected on a 27-yard field goal to give the Blue Devils a 17-point lead early in the second quarter.
Boone extended the Blue Devils lead to 27-3 when he connected with McCaffrey again, this time from 10 yards out. The touchdown pass capped off a eight- play, 80-yard drive with 5:23 left in the third quarter.
Wilson completed a seven-play, 97-yard drive with a 68-yard touchdown run to push the Duke lead to 34-3 with just 44 seconds left in the third quarter.
Wilson continued to dominate when he ran for all 78 yards on Duke's final scoring drive, topped off by a 45-yard touchdown run with 3:57 to play in the game.
Boone is a perfect 13-0 as a starter in career regular season play for Duke. The Blue Devils outgained the Jayhawks in total offensive yards, 511-297, in the contest.Game Notes
