Recap: So Carolina vs. South Alabama

Columbia, SC (SportsNetwork.com) - Dylan Thompson threw for one touchdown and was on the receiving end of another, as the South Carolina Gamecocks defeated South Alabama, 37-12, in a non-conference tilt at Williams-Brice Stadium.

The Gamecocks (6-5) defense kept South Alabama out of the end zone to become bowl eligible after beginning the season ranked No. 9 in the country.

The Jaguars (6-5) became bowl eligible last weekend, but Hunter Vaughn had a forgettable day in this one as he threw four interceptions, including one that was returned for a touchdown.

After the teams traded field goals in the early going, South Carolina claimed a 10-3 lead on Thompson's 29-yard touchdown pass to Nick Jones at the 2:41 mark of the first quarter.

The Jaguars answered with a 14-play drive that lasted nearly six and a half minutes, but they had to settle for a 29-yard field goal from Aleem Sunanon after the drive stalled.

The Gamecocks stretched their lead to 17-6 midway through the second quarter when Brison Williams stepped in front of a Vaughn pass and returned it 21 yards for a touchdown.

Sunanon trimmed the margin to 17-9 with a 20-yard field goal with two seconds to play until halftime.

Gamecocks kicker Elliott Fry tacked on six third-quarter points with field goals of 47 and 24 yards to make it a 23-9 game.

The Gamecocks began to pull away in the fourth quarter. Pharoh Cooper tossed a seven-yard TD back to Thompson on an option pass with 10:20 remaining.

On the ensuing possession, Gamecocks linebacker Skai Moore intercepted Vaughn near midfield and returned it all the way down to the South Alabama 14. David Williams ran it into the end zone on the very next play to open up a 37-9 lead.

Sunanon accounted for the final margin with a 31-yard field goal late in regulation.

Despite the lopsided final score, the Gamecocks were far from perfect as they lost four fumbles on the day.
