Recap: Kentucky vs. Vanderbilt

Lexington, KY (SportsNetwork.com) - Kentucky's defense yielded only eight first downs and 139 total yards, as the Wildcats claimed a rare Southeastern Conference victory with a 17-7 decision over Vanderbilt at Commonwealth Stadium.

Patrick Towles completed 23-of-30 passes for 201 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also ran for a score to help the Wildcats (3-1, 1-1 SEC) snap a 17-game conference losing streak and eclipse last season's win total.

Wade Freebeck completed only 8-of-25 passes for 85 yards for the Commodores (1-4, 0-3), who remain winless in conference play under first-year head coach Derek Mason. Freebeck threw three interceptions and was also sacked four times.

Towles gave the Wildcats a 7-0 lead on a 20-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Timmons midway through the opening frame, which capped a 13-play, 99-yard drive.

Vandy's defense tied the score at 7-7 at the 10:19 mark of the second quarter, when Darrius Sims stepped in front of a Towles pass and returned it 13 yards for a touchdown.

However, UK closed out the half with 10 unanswered points on a 44-yard field goal by Austin MacGinnis and a one-yard plunge by Towles.

Neither team scored in the second half.

The Wildcats defense allowed only 57 second-half yards and came up with three fourth-quarter interceptions to thwart Vandy's comeback hopes.
