Recap: Georgia vs. Vanderbilt

Athens, GA ( - Todd Gurley ran for 163 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries, helping 13th-ranked Georgia beat Vanderbilt 44-17 on Saturday.

Hutson Mason threw two touchdown passes to Chris Conley as the Bulldogs (4-1, 2-1 SEC) won their third straight game. Mason was 11-of-17 for 121 yards with one interception.

"The guys did play hard," said Georgia head coach Mark Richt. "Defensively, we were outstanding most of the day. On offense, we ran the ball well and we threw and caught better. We had more balance in the attack today."

Ralph Webb and Dallas Rivers both had a touchdown run for the Commodores (1-5, 0-4), who defeated the Bulldogs last year to snap a six-game losing streak in the series.

Georgia raced out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter. Gurley capped the Bulldogs' first drive with a 5-yard TD run, then shed three tackles on a 14- yard run up the middle and into the end zone.

On the first play of the next Georgia series, Mason hit Conley deep down the middle for a 44-yard scoring strike.

The Commodores had only one first down on their first four drives, but were in Georgia territory to begin the second quarter. Tommy Openshaw, however, missed a 49-yard field goal attempt.

Stephen Rivers replaced Wade Freebeck at quarterback on the next Vanderbilt drive and provided a spark. He completed all three of his passes, the last one to Chandler Dorrell along the right sideline for 36 yards. The reception by Dorrell set up Webb's 1-yard TD run.

Gurley showed off his arm during a seven-play sequence later in the second, hooking up with Jeb Blazevich for 50 yards. Mason finished the drive with a 5- yard TD pass to Conley. The extra point was blocked, leaving the score 27-7 at halftime.

Mason was picked off by Jahmel McIntosh on the opening drive of the third quarter, resulting in a 34-yard Openshaw field goal.

After the Bulldogs went three-and-out, Vanderbilt marched into Georgia territory. Facing a 4th-and-2 from the 29-yard line, Stephen Rivers rolled to his left and threw back across the field. It turned out to be a huge mistake as Devin Bowman intercepted the pass and returned it 63 yards for a touchdown.

"We had a costly turnover late in the ball game. We had a little bit of momentum and then wrong play was called and you look up and the ball is going the other way," said Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason. "It was a bad play all the way around for us. I thought we were just starting to get our feet going and get some momentum."

Marshall Morgan made a 22-yard field goal to put Georgia up 37-10 early in the fourth quarter.

The Commodores scored with six-plus minutes remaining on a Dallas Rivers run of six yards.

Nick Chubb added a 33-yard TD run for Georgia inside the final minute.
