Recap: Georgia vs. Troy

Athens, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Sony Michel ran for 155 yards with three touchdowns and Hutson Mason threw for a pair of scores, as 13th-ranked Georgia bounced back from last week's tough loss at South Carolina and cruised to a 66-0 victory over Troy.

Michel, a true freshman, averaged 15.5 yards on just 10 carries. He took over at tailback after Todd Gurley played the first two series. Gurley ran for 73 yards on six attempts, part of Georgia's 367-yard effort on the ground.

The Bulldogs (2-1), after the 38-35 loss last week in Columbia, outgained the Trojans 547-216 overall. Mason finished 8-of-11 for 97 yards through the air, while Isaiah McKenzie returned a punt for a touchdown in the lopsided victory.

It marked the most points for Georgia since a 70-6 romp over Northeast Louisiana in 1994 and the margin of victory was the largest since a 76-0 win over The Citadel in 1958. The Bulldogs will return to SEC play next week when Tennessee visits Sanford Stadium.

"Now we've got to turn our attention to conference play with Tennessee," said Georgia coach Mark Richt. "It's hard to get the feeling after South Carolina out of your system quite frankly. This helps a little bit, but we've got to play a conference game and get a victory to get back on track. Hopefully we'll be up for the task."

Dontreal Pruitt, making his first start at quarterback in place of Brandon Silvers, threw for 158 yards with an interception for Troy (0-4), which wrapped up its non-conference schedule and will open Sun Belt play next Saturday at Louisiana-Monroe.

"We got beat by a good team and we aren't very good, which is pretty obvious," said Troy coach Larry Blakeney. "Certainly nobody had us picked to win coming (in), but I wish we could have played better and done a little better against Georgia."

Troy took the opening kickoff and marched deep into Georgia territory with the aid of a penalty that negated an interception, but the 12-play drive ended with a missed 26-yard field goal.

It was all Georgia from there.

The Bulldogs answered with an 80-yard drive for a touchdown. Gurley ripped off a 48-yard carry to key the six-play series and Michel finished the all-ground attack with a 6-yard touchdown run.

Troy's Tommy Blevins fumbled after a 19-yard reception on the next play from scrimmage and Georgia needed just three plays to again find the end zone, as Mason found Kenneth Towns with a 9-yard score.

The Bulldogs forced a Troy punt and Michel followed with a 75-yard run. He scored from the eight on the next play to make it 21-0 and the next Georgia series ended with a 37-yard Marshall Morgan field goal 2 1/2 minutes into the second quarter.

McKenzie then picked up a punt on a bounce and raced 52 yards for a touchdown less than two minutes later for a 31-0 cushion before Michel capped the next Georgia offensive series, an 80-yard march, with an 18-yard touchdown run around the left end.

Brice Ramsey took over at quarterback for Georgia's next possession and finished a 61-yard drive with a 6-yard TD strike to Michael Bennett in the final minute of the first half.

Mason played the first series of the third quarter and threw a 10-yard scoring pass to Bennett for a 52-0 advantage. Sophomore quarterback Faton Bauta added a pair of rushing scores in the fourth quarter for the final margin.

"It's always nice to give guys a chance to play," added Richt. "We had a massive amount of guys get in. Guys got in and guys made plays. We played a bunch."

Game Notes

Gurley moved into fourth place all-time on the Georgia rushing list with 2,776 yards ... Silvers was sidelined after suffering a concussion last week against Abilene Christian ... Georgia last posted a shutout in a 38-0 win at Auburn in 2012 ... Georgia defensive back JJ Green was ejected early in the first quarter for targeting.
