Recap: Eastern Mich vs. Ball State

Ypsilanti, MI (Sports Network) - Jahwan Edwards scored three rushing touchdowns as the Ball State Cardinals easily defeated the Eastern Michigan Eagles, 51-20, in Mid-American Conference action at Rynearson Stadium.

Edwards carried the ball 15 times and finished with a team-best 81 yards for the Cardinals (3-1, 1-0 MAC) as they rebounded from a 34-27 setback against North Texas last week. Keith Wenning converted 17-of-28 passes for 317 yards and two touchdowns, with nine completions going to Willie Snead who registered a game-high 175 receiving yards.

The Eagles (1-3, 0-1), losers of three straight after kicking off the 2013 campaign with a 34-24 triumph versus Howard, were paced by Tyler Benz who connected on 20-of-32 passes for 212 yards and a score, although he was sacked three times and suffered a pair of interceptions. Running back Bronson Hill registered a game-high 126 rushing yards on 21 attempts in the setback.

EMU actually scored the first points of the afternoon when Darius Jackson reached the end zone on a seven-yard run on the opening possession, but a blocked PAT was a sign of things to come for the hosts.

Ball State then ripped off 27 straight points to take control of the meeting, beginning with a 36-yard touchdown run by Edwards.

With the TD run, Ball State became the only team in the nation to have scored a touchdown on its opening drive in all four games this season. Ohio State, which crushed Florida A&M on Saturday, 76-0, had its streak snapped by the Rattlers.

Barely two minutes later the Cardinals made the score 13-6 when Horactio Banks crossed the goal line from 43 yards out, although a failed two-point conversion followed. Wenning then tossed touchdown passes of 15 and 31 yards to Jordan Williams, the receiver finishing the day with four grabs for 105 yards.

The Eagles stopped the bleeding temporarily with seven minutes remaining in the second quarter when Ryan Brumfield recorded a one-yard TD run.

With less than a minute to play in the first half, Jamill Smith tacked on a 27-yard rushing score for Ball State, giving the visitors a commanding 34-13 advantage at the break.

A 35-yard field goal by BSU kicker Scott Secor began the scoring in the third quarter, although it took barely a minute for the Eagles to respond with a 24- yard touchdown pass from Benz to Dustin Creel in order to make the score 37-20.

Edwards tacked on scoring runs of 10 and three yards later in the frame, boosting the advantage to 31 points for the Cardinals before a scoreless fourth quarter closed out the day.

Eastern Michigan compiled a solid 416 yards of offense, but at the same time the team was hampered by nine penalties for 81 yards.
