Recap: NC State vs. Syracuse
Raleigh, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Jerome Smith ran for 140 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries to lead the Syracuse Orange over the NC State Wolfpack, 24-10, in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup at Carter-Finley Stadium.
Prince-Tyson Gulley added 132 yards and a score on nine carries for the Orange (3-3, 1-1 ACC), while Terrel Hunt ran for 92 yards and a score on 11 attempts. Hunt also threw for 74 yards and two interceptions on 10-of-20 passing as the squad won for the third time in the last four outings.
For the Wolfpack (3-3, 0-3), Pete Thomas threw for 151 yards, a touchdown and interception on 17-of-35 passing. Bryan Underwood caught six passes for 89 yards, while Shadrach Thornton was the leading rusher with 60 yards on 20 carries. NC State has now bowed in two straight and three of the last four contests.
After a scoreless opening period, the Orange were the first to get on the board with a scoring drive early in the second. Smith ran in to the end zone from the one yard line, capping an eight-play, 77-yard drive and putting the visitors up 7-0.
After an interception set them up at midfield, the Wolfpack tied the game late in the half with a five-play, 36-yard drive. Thomas connected with David Grinnage for a 21-yard touchdown pass with 1:15 to play before the break.
A 19-yard field goal by Syracuse kicker Ryan Norton was the only scoring of the third.
The Wolfpack knotted the score at 10-10 with a 27-yard yard field goal early in the fourth by Niklas Sade.
Syracuse took the lead for good with a three-play, 80-yard drive that was capped off by an 18-yard run for a score by Gulley. The extra point was no good however, leaving the Orange with a 16-10 edge with 6:13 remaining.
The visitors added another late score on an eight-yard run by Hunt with under three minutes to play. A successful two-point conversion for the Orange provided them with a comfortable 14-point win.
The Orange finished with 362 yards rushing, while holding the Wolfpack to just 129 yards on the ground. NC State converted only 7-of-23 on third down on the day.Game Notes
