Recap: Pittsburgh vs. New Mexico

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - The Pittsburgh Panthers tallied 283 yards on the ground as they defeated the New Mexico Lobos, 49-27, in a non- conference matchup at Heinz Field.

James Conner ran for 119 yards and two touchdowns on just 12 carries while Isaac Bennett added 101 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries for the Panthers (1-1).

Tom Savage completed 13-of-17 pass attempts for 236 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions for Pitt. Savage's key target was Tyler Boyd, who made six catches for 134 yards and a score while adding 39 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

The Lobos (1-2) struggled severely offensively. Clayton Mitchem amassed just 64 yards through the air on 8-of-15 passing while New Mexico ran the ball 52 times total, with 11 different ball carriers, for 213 yards. Crusoe Gongbay gained 95 yards and a score on 10 carries and Cole Gautsche added 50 yards and two touchdowns on 10 rushes.

Pitt dominated the first half with Savage completing touchdown passes to Scott Orndoff to open up scoring. Boyd scored 33-yard touchdown run while Conner produced a one-yard and 38-yard touchdown rush.

Justus Adams was able to kick in a 28-yard field goal along with a 22-yard field goal for New Mexico but those were the only points scored for the Lobos in the first half. Savage completed a 34-yard touchdown pass to Boyd as time expired in the second quarter and Chris Blewitt's successful extra-point conversion gave Pitt a 35-6 edge at the break.

The Panthers struck first in the second half with Bennett taking in an eight-yard touchdown run.

New Mexico managed to get some offense going as they responded with two touchdowns, both rushing scores by Gautsche.

Bennett scored early in the fourth quarter on a 13-yard touchdown for Pitt and New Mexico was not able to respond until the final minute when it scored on a a 20-yard touchdown run by Gongbay to make the final score, 49-27.

Pitt scored touchdowns on six of their first eight drives of the game. The Panthers managed 527 yards of total offense compared to just 270 yards by the Eagles.

All five of the Panthers first half touchdowns were scored by freshman.
