Recap: Louisiana Tech vs. Southern Miss
Ruston, LA (SportsNetwork.com) - Kenneth Dixon rushed for a season-high 207 yards to help lead the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs to a 36-13 triumph over the Southern Miss Golden Eagles in a Conference USA bout at Joe Aillet Stadium.
Dixon did his damage on 25 carries and scored a touchdown for Louisiana Tech (4-5, 3-2 C-USA), which has won back-to-back games for the first time all season. Scotty Young completed 22-of-37 passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns. Trent Taylor (six receptions, 51 yards, TD) was Young's primary beneficiary at receiver.
USM (0-9, 0-5) extended the longest active losing streak in the FBS to 21 games. Nick Mullens threw for 298 yards on 25-of-51 passing with a touchdown and three interceptions. Tyre Bracken hauled in seven passes for 81 yards.
After the Bulldogs punted early in the first quarter and pinned USM on its own 1-yard line, DeAngelo Brooks tackled George Payne in the end zone for a safety. Louisiana Tech added a touchdown a few minutes later on a 13-yard hookup from Young to Taylor to go up, 9-0.
USM scored its first points early in the second quarter when Corey Acosta connected on a 22-yard field goal.
The Bulldogs had a 12-play, 67-yard drive in the final four minutes of the first half and capped it off with a three-yard touchdown pass from Young to Sterling Griffin. USM got the ball back with just 27 seconds left, but Mullens managed to complete three straight passes before Acosta drilled a 50-yard field goal as time expired before the half.
Louisiana Tech extended its lead to 19-6 early in the third quarter following a 38-yard field goal by Kyle Fischer. Fischer would add another field goal (43 yards) later in the third.
The Bulldogs put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter with an eight- yard touchdown run by Hunter Lee and a one-yard scoring rush by Dixon.
The Golden Eagles scored in the game's final minute when Mullens completed an eight-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Sloter.
