San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Sean Mannion threw for 367 yards and three touchdowns as the Oregon State Beavers came back in the fourth quarter to defeat the San Diego State Aztecs, 34-30, in a non-conference matchup at Qualcomm Stadium.
Mannion completed 38-of-55 pass attempts for OSU (3-1) as it picked up its third consecutive victory since losing to FCS foe Eastern Washington in its season opener. Brandin Cooks made 14 receptions for 141 yards while Richard Mullaney reeled in seven receptions for 86 yards. Kevin Cummings also made an impact in the passing game with six catches for 53 yards and a touchdown.
SDSU (0-3) was outscored 20-3 in the fourth quarter as it lost its third- straight to open up the campaign. Quinn Kaehler went 16-of-25 for 251 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Adam Muema racked up 71 yards and a score on 28 carries. Colin Lockett led the Aztecs in receiving with 113 yards and a touchdown on five grabs.
The Aztecs struck first as Kaehler completed a 23-yard touchdown pass to Donnell Pumphrey just over three minutes after the opening kickoff to conclude a six-play, 65-yard drive.
After both offenses were forced to punt, the Beavers responded as Ward rushed one-yard into the end zone to tie the score at seven. Ward's touchdown run was set up by a 46-yard pass from Mannion to Cooks.
OSU's defense forced a three-and-out and Mannion spearheaded another scoring drive, this one ending with a two-yard pass to Kellen Clute. Trevor Romaine chipped in his extra-point attempt to give the visitors a 14-7 edge on the scoreboard with 2:03 remaining in the first quarter.
The lead did not last long as Kaehler completed an 80-yard touchdown pass to Lockett on SDSU's first play of the ensuing drive. Wes Feer evened the score with his successful extra point conversion as the game progressed into the second stanza.
The Aztecs begin their domination of the second quarter as they jumped back in front with a 45-yard field goal by Feer with just under 12 minutes left before the break. They took a 24-14 lead into halftime thanks to Muema's two-yard touchdown scamper at the 3:35 mark of the period.
The only score of the third quarter came courtesy of a 40-yard field goal by Feer.
OSU narrowed the deficit early in the fourth frame as Mannion completed a two- yard touchdown pass to Kevin Cummings.
SDSU's offense could not get anything going on its next drive, but its defense came up big as Damontae Kazee forced a fumble when tackling Cooks deep in Beavers' territory. An unsportsmanlike conduct call pushed the Aztecs back and they were unable to reach the end zone, but added three with a 30-yard field goal by Feer.
OSU made it a two-point game as Mannion led it down the field on a 10-play, 81-yard drive that concluded with a 10-yard touchdown strike to Ward.
The Beavers' defense made another huge play as Steven Nelson picked off Kaehler and returned the interception 16 yards for six points. The two-point conversion try to make it a six-point contest was unsuccessful, which left the Beavers with a 34-30 lead with 2:31 left in regulation.
OSU's defense then finished off the job just under a minute later as Ryan Murphy intercepted a Kaehler pass that was deflected to return the ball to the offense, which managed to run out the clock.
OSU was penalized 13 times for 99 yards while SDSU was flagged nine times for 87 yards.Game Notes
