Recap: Army vs. Temple

West Point, NY (Sports Network) - It was the Montel Harris show at Michie Stadium, as the senior transfer rumbled for a school-record 351 yards and seven touchdowns to lead the Temple Owls to a 63-32 rout over the Army Black Knights.

Harris came within one touchdown of matching Howard Griffith's (Illinois) NCAA single-game record, set back in 1990. Matt Brown added two first-quarter rushing touchdowns before exiting with an injury, as the Owls (4-6) snapped a four-game slide.

Trent Steelman ran for 139 yards and three scores for the Black Knights (2-9), who have now dropped five in a row in the head-to-head series. Larry Dixon added 106 rushing yards in the loss, and teammate Raymond Maples finished with 94 yards on the ground.

Brown scored two touchdowns in the first quarter to stake Temple an early 14-0 lead. The first of those TDs came on a 12-yard scamper at the 9:11 mark, and the second came with 3:03 to play in the frame as Brown broke loose for a 36- yard run.

Army answered with a 12-play, 83-yard drive that lasted nearly five and a half minutes and ended with a seven-yard touchdown run by Steelman. A 37-yard field goal by Army kicker Eric Osteen made it a 14-10 game with just under five minutes remaining in the opening half.

However, Harris ripped off a 60-yard touchdown run less than a minute later, and he scored again on a one-yard run in the final minute of the half to send Temple into the locker room with a 28-10 halftime lead.

It took the Black Knights only four plays from scrimmage to find the end zone at the start of the second half, as Steelman scored on a QB sneak and Maples added the two-point conversion to trim the margin to 28-18.

Temple answered with an 11-play, 75-yard drive, capped by Harris' one-yard touchdown plunge.

On the ensuing possession, Steelman broke free for a 56-yard touchdown run to make it a 35-24 game with 5:48 remaining in the third quarter.

Four plays later, Harris stretched the margin to 42-24 on a 37-yard touchdown burst. He notched his fifth rushing TD on a two-yard run to start the fourth quarter.

Army stopped the bleeding momentarily a minute later when Malcolm Brown found the end zone on a three-yard run, and he added the two-point conversion to make it a 49-32 game with 13:51 to play in regulation.

However, Harris shut the door with two more touchdown runs in a span of three minutes. His sixth TD of the day came on a 37-yard run with 13:03 to play, and he would celebrate yet another touchdown following a one-yard run at the 10:35 mark.

Army entered the day as the nation's top rushing team, but the Owls dominated the ground game with a school-record 534 yards and a team average of 9.4 yards per carry. Temple's 63 points tied a school record set back in 1973.
