Las Vegas, NV (SportsNetwork.com) - The NCAA has denied UNLV's appeal over a postseason ban for low academic scores, the school said Thursday.

The ban means the Rebels aren't eligible to play for the Mountain West title next season or to compete in a bowl game after making one for the first time in 13 years this past season.

UNLV had an average Academic Progress Rate score of 925 over the past four years -- five points below what the NCAA requires as a minimum.

UNLV President Donald Snyder says the school accepts the decision and will use the situation as an opportunity to improve.

"I am confident in the plan that our athletics director and head coach have enacted to address the issue," he said in a statement.

Rebels coach Bobby Hauck agreed to a new three-year contract in November that runs through the 2016 season.

UNLV went 7-6, losing to North Texas in the Heart of Dallas Bowl on New Year's Day. It was the program's first bowl game appearance since the 2000 Las Vegas Bowl.
