Recap: South Carolina vs. Vanderbilt

Columbia, SC (SportsNetwork.com) - Sindarius Thornwell posted 19 points as the South Carolina Gamecocks slipped by the Vanderbilt Commodores, 65-59, in SEC action at Colonial Life Arena.

Thornwell, who knocked down 6-of-8 shots at the free-throw line on the day, also cleared six rebounds and handed out six assists as South Carolina (9-15, 2-9 SEC) snapped a three-game slide and won for just the second time in the last 11 decisions. Brenton Williams and Duane Notice pitched in with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

The Commodores (13-10, 5-6) were paced by Damian Jones with a double-double that consisted of 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, adding an astonishing seven blocked shots as well for a team that lost for the second time in as many games. Kyle Fuller tallied a game-high 20 points and Rod Odom 10.

USC shot a mere 32.4 percent from the floor in the first half, including 1- of-7 behind the 3-point line, but still the host held a slim 28-27 advantage at the break. Vandy missed all four opportunities behind the 3-point line in the frame and was just 5-of-10 at the charity stripe.

In the second half the Commodores pulled ahead by a couple of points for a brief moment, but down the stretch the Gamecocks pushed out to a double-digit lead before holding on for the six-point win.

South Carolina won the battle of the boards, 45-31, coming up with almost as many offensive rebounds (26) as the visitors had total in the meeting.

This was one of several games originally scheduled for Wednesday that was moved due to inclement weather.
