Recap: Canisius vs. Siena
Springfield, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Billy Baron scored 17 points, leading all five starters in double figures, as the Canisius Golden Griffins topped the Siena Saints, 71-65, in the quarterfinals of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament at the MassMutual Center.
Baron, who was recently named the MAAC Player of the Year, added six assists and five steals for the fourth-seeded Golden Griffs (21-11) in the triumph. Chris Manhertz registered a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, Chris Perez pitched in 13 points, Jordan heath 11 and Zach Lewis 10 points to go along with four assists and four steals.
The seventh-seeded Saints (15-17) were paced by Brett Bisping and his game- high 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the floor, adding nine rebounds, while Rob Poole tacked on 14 points in the setback as well.
Siena opened the meeting on a 9-3 run and connected on a solid 46.2 percent from the floor in the first half, but knocked down just 1-of-6 attempts on the perimeter. Conversely, Canisius was an impressive 8-of-14 on the outside and 57.9 percent accurate from the floor overall, but still trailed by a point at the break, 34-33.
In the second half the Saints elevated to 52.2 percent accuracy from the field and 5-of-11 beyond the arc, but at the same time they were outscored at the charity stripe by a 12-2 margin, allowing the Griffs to slip by for the victory.
In a game that featured 11 ties and 21 lead changes, Canisius shot 10-of-22 behind the 3-point line in order to counter 16 turnovers.
Canisius will now take on Iona contest on Sunday for the right to play in the championship round on Monday night.Game Notes
