Recap: Quinnipiac vs. Niagara
Hamden, CT (SportsNetwork.com) - Ousmane Drame and Ike Azotam both registered double-doubles for Quinnipiac to help the Bobcats to an 85-71 victory over the Niagara Purple Eagles in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tilt at TD Bank Sports Center.
Azotam finished with 14 points and the same numbers of rebounds for Quinnipiac (11-6, 6-2 MAAC) while Drame tallied 14 points and 10 board. Zaid Hearst also netted 14 points and came up just one board shy of a double-double himself. Umar Shannon scored a team-high 16 points while Shaq Shannon added 12.
For Niagara (5-14, 2-6), Antoine Mason, who entered the contest leading the nation in scoring with 27.6 ppg, poured in 28 points on 9-of-19 shooting from the floor. Tahjere McCall chipped in 14 points and Rayvon Harris had 10 points. Marcus Ware came off the bench to contribute nine points and eight boards before fouling out.
The Purple Eagles got off to a slow start and hit on only 30 percent of their field goal attempts including an 0-of-9 clip from 3-point range before halftime. Quinnipiac shot just 34.3 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, but took a 41-27 lead into the break thanks to its 4-of-11 efficiency from beyond the arc.
Although Mason scored 21 of his points in the second half and Niagara shot 46.9 percent from the field as a unit, the visitors could not overcome the 14- point deficit. The Bobcats made good on 50 percent of their field goal tries and converted 17-of-21 attempts at the free-throw line.
Quinnipiac, which entered the bout pacing all Division I programs in rebounding margin (13.1 rpg), finished with a 56-27 edge in total rebounds.Game Notes
