Recap: Valparaiso vs. Detroit
Valparaiso, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Juwan Howard Jr. drained a 3-pointer with six seconds left, as the Detroit Titans stunned the Valparaiso Crusaders with a 59-57 victory in Horizon League action at the ARC.
Howard Jr. finished with 19 points and Evan Bruinsma tacked on 12 points and 10 rebounds for Detroit (11-14, 4-6 Horizon). Bruinsma had nine turnovers to go with his double-double.
Alec Peters netted 16 points and LaVonte Dority chipped in 13 for Valparaiso (14-11, 6-4).
Detroit clung to a 29-28 lead at halftime after shooting an even 50 percent from the floor in the first frame. Valparaiso only connected on 45.5 percent from the field, but forced 11 turnovers in the period.
Both teams shot below 40 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes. However, the Crusaders managed to take a 57-56 lead with 37 seconds left on a layup from Peters. On the other end Bruinsma was blocked by Bobby Capobianco, but the Titans maintained possession and called a timeout with nine seconds to play. Howard Jr. came out of the huddle to hit the game-winner three seconds later.
