Recap: Monmouth vs. Fairfield

West Long Branch, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Andrew Nicholas scored 19 points as the Monmouth Hawks narrowly defeated the Fairfield Stags, 63-60, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference contest at the MAC.

Josh James registered 15 points and six assists for the Hawks (10-10, 4-5 MAAC), who have won two straight games. Deon Jones tallied 13 points and seven rebounds.

Maurice Barrow had 20 points in just 23 minutes for the Stags (4-16, 1-8), who lost their second straight decision. Marcus Gilbert added 19 points while KJ Rose had seven points, seven assists and seven boards.

Fairfield shot 40 percent from the field, including 7-of-20 from beyond the arc, in the first half and held a slim 31-29 lead at the intermission. Monmouth converted on 42.9 percent of its field goal attempts but missed all six shot attempts from 3-point range.

The Hawks turned it around in the second period as they connected on 55 percent of their field goal tries. With 2:37 left James made a layup to put Monmouth up 60-59 and from there the Hawks held on for the narrow win.

Monmouth dominated play inside as they outscored Fairfield 34-14 in the paint. The Stags tried to attack from the perimeter where they connected on 12-of-33, compared to 3-of-11 for the hosts.
