Recap: Fairfield vs. Manhattan

Bridgeport, CT (SportsNetwork.com) - Maurice Barrow scored 18 points as the Fairfield Stags finally secured their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win of the season with a 71-67 stunner against Manhattan at Webster Bank Arena.

Also scoring in double figures for the Stags (4-14, 1-7 MAAC), as they snapped a five-game slide, were Marcus Gilbert and Sean Grennan with 17 and 12 points, respectively.

The Jaspers (13-4, 6-2), who entered the weekend tied with Canisius for first place in the league standings, were paced by Michael Alvarado who tallied a game-high 20 points, but he shot just 5-of-15 from the field as the team had a two-game win streak come to an end. Ashton Pankey contributed 13 points in the setback.

Manhattan made a total of just seven field goals in the first half and shot a disappointing 1-of-7 behind the 3-point line, as the team fell behind by a 39-23 score at the break. Fairfield nearly outscored the visitors beyond the arc in the first half alone, connecting on 7-of-11 attempts on the outside.

In the second half the Stags were the ones who stumbled along with only six field goals, but the team maintained its advantage thanks to an 18-of-30 showing at the free-throw line.

Fairfield turned the ball over 20 times on the afternoon, but made up for those miscues with 9-of-16 accuracy on the perimeter.

Manhattan, which played without leading scorer George Beamon (20.1 ppg) due to a shoulder injury, won the first meeting of the season between the teams just two weeks ago by a lopsided 83-57 score at home.
