Recap: Canisius vs. Fairfield
Buffalo, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Billy Baron finished with 22 points and nine assists as the Canisius Golden Griffins downed the Fairfield Stags, 90-78, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference matchup at the Koessler Athletic Center.
Zach Lewis tallied 21 points and six rebounds for the Golden Griffins (19-10, 13-5 MAAC), who also received 13 points courtesy of Chris Perez. Phil Valenti and Jordan Heath added 11 points apiece.
For Fairfield (6-23, 3-15), Marcus Gilbert poured in a game-high 26 points. Before being ejected in the second half with a double technical K.J. Rose chipped in 13 points, while Doug Chappell and Maurice Barrow scored 10 points apiece. Coleman Johnson made his mark with eight points, 11 boards and five assists.
The Stags managed to take a 45-38 lead into the intermission thanks to their 57.7 percent efficiency from the floor and 7-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc in the first half. Canisius trailed at the break despite hitting on 53.3 percent of its shots from the floor in the opening 20 minutes of action.
The Golden Griffins stormed back by knocking down 50 percent of their field goal tries and also converting 26-of-36 shots at the free-throw line after the break. Fairfield cooled off to sink only 29 percent of its shots from the floor in the second stanza.
Canisius outscored the Stags, 34-24, in the paint and 29-21, at the charity stripe.Game Notes
