Recap: Niagara vs. Canisius
Niagara University, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Billy Baron netted 34 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out five assists as the Canisius Golden Griffins outlasted the Niagara Purple Eagles, 71-65, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at Gallagher Center.
Baron connected on 10-of-16 shooting from the floor, also hitting 11-of-14 from the free-throw line for Canisius (17-9, 11-4 MAAC). Chris Perez added 17 points in the win. The Golden Griffins snapped a two-game losing skid with the victory.
Antoine Mason scored 17 points to pace Niagara (6-20, 3-12), adding nine rebounds to his stat line. Marcus Ware recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Wesley Myers chipped in 10 points and four steals. The Purple Eagles have lost five games in a row.
Canisius shot 45.2 percent from the floor in the first half, but went just 1- of-9 from 3-point range. Niagara took the lead into the intermission, 37-32, after hitting 44.4 percent of its field goal tries.
Things got ugly for the Purple Eagles in the second period, as they shot a miserable 29.4 percent from the floor, including 2-of-13 from 3-point range. The Golden Griffins shot 39.3 percent in the second frame, and went 14-of-17 from the free-throw line, grabbing the lead back for the victory.
Canisius had the advantage from the free-throw line, 17-9. Niagara held the edge in bench points, 14-6, in the contest.Game Notes
