Recap: Canisius vs. Iona
Buffalo, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Behind a career-high 32 points from A.J. English, the Iona Gaels downed the Canisius Golden Griffins, 101-91, in a high-scoring Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference affair at the Koessler Center.
English shot 10-of-17 from the field and 8-of-9 from the free-throw line in his third effort of at least 30 points this season for Iona (15-8, 12-2 MAAC), which extended its winning streak to seven games. David Laury was also outstanding with 23 points and nine rebounds. Isaiah Williams netted 18 points, Sean Armand tallied 10 points and nine assists and Tre Bowman also scored 10.
For Canisius (16-9, 10-4), losers of two straight, Chris Perez poured in 25 points and Billy Baron registered 24 points, six assists and six rebounds. Jordan Heath (16 points) and Phil Valenti (15) both collected nine rebounds for the hosts.
Canisius shot 57.1 percent from the field in the first half, including 7-of-12 from beyond the arc, en route to a 50-43 advantage at intermission.
After shooting just 43.2 percent in the opening 20 minutes, Iona improved to 51.7 percent in the second stanza (including 9-of-16 from 3-point range) and also drained 19-of-24 at the free-throw line. The Griffs, meanwhile, lost control by regressing to just 37.1 percent from the floor. The Gaels used a 15-4 run late in the game to separate themselves.
