Recap: South Dakota St vs. Nebraska Omaha
Brookings, SD (SportsNetwork.com) - The Nebraska Omaha Mavericks defeated the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, 80-71, in a Summit League matchup at Frost Arena behind Marcus Tyus and his 16 points.
The Mavericks (11-7, 1-2 Summit) ended a three-game losing streak and won their first league contest. CJ Carter scored 15 points and John Karhoff added 11. The reserves were led by Justin Simmons and his 12 points.
Brayden Carlson led the Jackrabbits (10-9, 2-2) with an efficient 26 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field and a perfect 12-of-12 from the free- throw line. Cody Larson tallied 14 points and Jake Bittle 10. Jordan Dykstra led his team with nine boards and scored 12, but he shot 4-of-17 from the field, including just 1-of-9 from the 3-point line. The Jackrabbits had won six of their previous seven games.
The teams went into the half with the Mavericks holding a 36-29 advantage over the home team. Tyus scored 13 of his 16 in the opening frame while the Mavericks shot 53.8 percent from the floor as a group. The Jackrabbits shot just 26.9 percent from the field in the opening frame, but they were kept in it as Carlson went 10-of-10 from the foul line.
In the second half, the Jackrabbits improved their shooting considerably by hitting half of their 34 shots from the field, but they could not slow the Mavericks down. The Mavericks shot 57.1 percent from the field and hit 10- of-12 free throws to hold on.
The Jackrabbits' bench collectively scored just six points, while the Mavericks' reserves produced 23 points. Carlson tied an SDSU record with his shooting performance from the foul line.Game Notes
