Recap: Western Carolina vs. UNC Greensboro
Cullowhee, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Trey Sumler tallied 16 points as the Western Carolina Catamounts cruised past the UNC Greensboro Spartans, 72-51, at the Ramsey Center in Southern Conference action.
Sumler shot 6-of-14 from the field for Catamounts (8-8, 1-0 SoCon). Mike Brown added 13 points, shooting 4-of-4 from the field, including 2-of-2 from 3-point range.
Kyle Cain logged a game-high 17 points for the Spartans (7-9, 0-1), shooting 6-of-10 from the floor. Kayel Locke followed with 14 points on 4-of-9 from the field.
The Catamounts out-dueled the Spartans in the first half, shooting 48.4 percent to UNCG's 39.1 percent. The halftime score was 36-29 in favor of Western Carolina.
In the second half, the Catamounts were only marginally better than the Spartans' 40 percent from the field at 41.4 percent. They were, however, able to rely on their perimeter game, hitting 5-of-11 from beyond the arc, while the Spartans missed all four attempts from long range. The Catamounts' lead swelled to as large as 24 points with four and half minutes to play.
Points off turnovers contributed noticeably to Western Carolina's blowout victory, as it outscored UNCG by a 35-10 margin in that category.Game Notes
