Recap: Pepperdine vs. Portland

Malibu, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Lamond Murray Jr. finished with 16 points to lead the Pepperdine Waves over the Portland Pilots, 76-65, in West Coast Conference action at Firestone Fieldhouse.

For the Waves (12-8, 5-3 WCC), Stacy Davis added 14 points and eight rebounds, Malcolm Brooks finished with 13 points and Jeremy Major chipped in with 11 points.

Kevin Bailey scored a game-high 27 points to lead Pilots (11-8, 3-4), while Ryan Nicholas scored 14 points.

Portland shot 40.7 percent from the field in the opening period and connected on 4-of-8 from 3-point distance to give the Pilots a 34-30 advantage going into intermission. Pepperdine struggled in the first half, making just 37.5 percent of its field goal tries and missing all but one of its 10 shots from beyond the arc.

After halftime, the Waves found their range, knocking down 65 percent of their shots, including 2-of-4 from 3-point range. The Pilots hit on 40.7 percent of their shots in the second and 2-of-9 from deep, but were outscored 18-7 from the free-throw line in the half. The Waves opened the second period on a 7-1 run to take a lead they would never relinquish, as they pulled away for the victory.

Pepperdine dominated in the frontcourt, outscoring Portland in the paint, 36-24, and outrebounding them 40-27. The bench for the Waves outscored the reserves for the Pilots, 32-11.
