Recap: Santa Clara vs. Gonzaga
Santa Clara, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Sam Dower finished with 13 points and drained the game-winning 3-pointer with two seconds remaining to lift the Gonzaga Bulldogs to a 54-52 victory over the Santa Clara Broncos in West Coast Conference action at the Leavey Center.
Gary Bell, Jr. led the way with 15 points for Gonzaga (19-3, 9-1 WCC), which extended their winning streak to five games. Przemek Karnowski tallied 11 points, eight rebounds and four blocks for the visitors.
For Santa Clara (10-13, 3-7), losers of five in a row, Evan Roquemore netted 15 points and Brandon Clark poured in 12.
Santa Clara shot a lackluster 34.8 percent from the field in the first half, but Gonzaga was even worse at a meager 26.9 percent, as the Broncos took a slight 22-20 lead into the break.
The Broncos extended their lead to as many as seven early in the second stanza before Gonzaga took control, as it led by 10 with under four minutes to play. Santa Clara pieced together a furious 13-2 run, however, to take a one-point lead with 28 seconds left following a Clark jumper. The Bulldogs answered on their final possession with Dower's game-winner, and the Broncos' desperation heave at the buzzer did not fall.
In a game where neither team shot greater than 36 percent from the field, Gonzaga's 17-11 scoring advantage at the foul line proved to be the difference.Game Notes
