Recap: Portland vs. Southern Utah
Portland, OR (SportsNetwork.com) - Thomas van der Mars scored 17 points as the Portland Pilots routed the Southern Utah Thunderbirds, 86-57, at the Chiles Center.
Van der Mars went 6-of-12 from the field and 5-of-8 at the free-throw line for the Pilots (5-3). Kevin Bailey and Volodymyr Gerun tallied 16 and 12 points, respectively.
Trey Kennedy led the Thunderbirds (1-4) with 12 points on 4-of-6 from the floor. Juwan Major was his only teammate to reach double figures with 10 points.
While both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm in the opening half, the Thunderbirds were woeful from the field, hitting only 7-of-29 (24.1 percent). Shooting at 38.1 percent clip on their field goals, the Pilots claimed a comfortable 38-22 lead at half.
Though the Thunderbirds improved to 50 percent from the floor in the second half, they were eclipsed by the Pilots' superior 60 percent performance. Portland also put the game out of reach at the line during the latter half, hitting 14-of-17 with the clock stopped.
Portland dominated nearly every scoring category, including points in the paint (40-12), second-chance points (19-0), points off turnovers (16-8) and fast-break points (18-6).Game Notes
