Recap: Appalachian St vs. Citadel

Boone, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Tab Hamilton netted 17 points to lead the Appalachian State Mountaineers over the Citadel Bulldogs, 54-45, in Southern Conference action at the Holmes Center.

Mike Neal notched 15 points with six assists for Appalachian State (7-15, 3-6 SoCon). Tommy Spagnolo chipped in 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the double-double in the win, which ended a two-game Mountaineers losing streak.

Quinton Marshall scored 13 points to pace The Citadel (4-21, 0-10), and Matt Van Scyoc contributed 12 points with five rebounds. The Bulldogs have lost 13 consecutive contests.

Neither team shot very well in the first half. Appalachian State hit 37 percent of its field goal tries in the first frame, including 4-of-10 from 3- point range, and took a 27-21 lead into the break. The Citadel hit 33.3 percent of its shot attempts in the half.

The Mountaineers improved in the second half to 40 percent shooting, and went 9-of-10 from the free-throw line in the period. The Bulldogs connected on 38.5 percent of their tries from the floor.

Appalachian State had the edge over The Citadel from the free-throw line, 12-4, and in rebounding, 36-28. The Bulldogs held a slight advantage in points in the paint, 18-14.
