Recap: Wagner vs. Bryant
Staten Island, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Kenneth Ortiz scored 18 points and made seven steals as the Wagner Seahawks turned back the Bryant Bulldogs, 73-61, in Northeast Conference action at the Spiro Sports Center.
Ortiz, who shot 6-of-11 from the floor, also pulled down six rebounds and handed out three assists for the Seahawks (13-11, 7-4 NEC) as they posted a third straight win and the fourth in the last five outings. Latif Rivers pitched in with 15 points and Marcus Burton 13 as the duo combined to shoot 5- of-10 behind the 3-point line.
The Bulldogs (16-10, 8-3) were paced by Alex Francis as he posted a double- double consisting of 26 points and 10 rebounds, although he also turned the ball over six times without the benefit of a single assist as the squad had a three-game win streak come to an end. Dyami Starks contributed 11 points and Corey Maynard 10 for the visitors as well.
Francis stepped up and produced 12 points and six boards in the first half, but Bryant as a whole shot just 39.3 percent from the floor and missed all seven chances on the perimeter, en route to a 34-24 deficit at the break.
In the second half the visitors jumped up to 54.2 percent accuracy from the floor and limited Wagner to just nine field goals. However, the Seahawks feasted at the free-throw line in the period (18-of-22), as they cruised to the double-digit win.
In addition to being outscored at the charity stripe, 21-11, the Bulldogs also hurt themselves with 18 turnovers on the day.
During the contest Francis scored the 2,000th point of his career. He is already one of just five players in NEC history to have at least 1,700 points and 800 rebounds and has the potential to become the first player in league history to finish with 2,000 points and 1,000 boards.Game Notes
