Recap: Central Mich vs. Kent State
Mount Pleasant, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - John Simons notched a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds and the Central Michigan Chippewas edged out the Kent State Golden Flashes 78-73 in overtime at McGuirk Arena in Mid- American Conference play.
Chris Fowler netted 18 points for the Chippewas (8-13, 1-8 MAC), who won their first conference game after dropping eight straight. Braylon Rayson and Rayshawn Simmons both added 10 points.
Darren Goodson recorded a double-double on 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Golden Flashes (12-10, 3-6), who have lost five of their last six. Kris Brewer and Derek Jackson logged 17 and 12 points, respectively.
The Flashes started strong, shooting 58.3 percent from the field in the opening half. Meanwhile, the Chippewas hit on just 32.1 percent of their shots and headed into halftime down, 32-25.
In the second half, however, the Chippewas improved, knocking down 42.3 percent from the floor. Kent State shot 50 percent, but got to the line for just 4-of-7. With the clock stopped with 34 seconds left, Simons sank two free throws to put Central Michigan up three, but K.K. Simmons responded for the opposition just six seconds later with a game-tying 3-pointer, sending it to overtime.
With 4:11 left in overtime, Simons drained another 3-pointer, which put CMU up two, a lead it would not give back.
The Chippewas outscored their opponent 22-9 in points off turnovers and 13-7 in second-chance points.Game Notes
