Recap: Rhode Island vs. Saint Josephs
Kingston, RI (SportsNetwork.com) - Ronald Roberts logged 18 points and nine rebounds, as the Saint Joseph's Hawks narrowly defeated the Rhode Island Rams, 57-54, in an Atlantic 10 Conference showdown at the Thomas M. Ryan Center.
DeAndre Bembry and Halil Kanacevic each scored 12 points for the Hawks (18-7, 8-3 A-10), who extended their winning streak to three games.
E.C. Matthews had 17 points and five assists and Gilvydas Biruta scored 10 points for the Rams (11-16, 2-10), who have lost six straight contests.
URI made 41.9 percent of its shots from the field in the first half and it led 33-25 at the break. SJU shot 35.7 percent on field goal attempts, including just 1-of-10 from beyond the arc.
The Hawks played much better in the second frame, as they drained 57.1 percent of their shots from the floor. After a back-and-forth period, the Rams tied the score up at 48 with 5:32 left. From that point, SJU went on a 9-6 run to finish the game and held on for a close win. URI had one last chance to tie the game in the waning seconds, but Matthews' 3-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark.
Despite losing, URI held a 35-30 rebounding edge.Game Notes
