Recap: Massachusetts vs. VA Commonwealth
Amherst, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Chaz Williams scored 20 points, including four crucial free-throws in the final seconds to put the finishing touches on an 80-75 victory for the Massachusetts Minutemen over the Virginia Commonwealth Rams in an Atlantic-10 brawl at the Mullins Center.
Derrick Gordon contributed 16 points for UMass (21-5, 8-4 A-10), which has won four of its last five. Trey Davis tacked on 13 points off the bench, Cady Lalanne tallied 10 points and nine rebounds and Sampson Carter cleared 10 boards.
Treveon Graham finished with 19 points and eight rebounds for VCU (20-7, 8-4), which has lost three of its last four. Juvonte Reddic had 13 points and nine rebounds, Melvin Johnson chipped in 12 points and Rob Brandenberg notched 10.
VCU entered halftime with a 39-34 lead. The Rams shot at a 47.1 percent clip in the opening period, while limiting UMass to 34.2 percent shooting.
The tables turned in the second half when the Minutemen improved to 53.1 percent shooting and VCU cooled to 32.5 percent. UMass was clinging to a 76-75 lead with 20 seconds left, but Williams went a perfect 4-of-4 at the charity stripe the rest of the way to hold off the Rams.
UMass doubled up VCU from the free-throw line (20-10). The Rams outscored the Minutemen 21-0 from 3-point range.Game Notes
