Recap: Dayton vs. IUPU-Ft Wayne
Dayton, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - A 3-pointer by Jordan Sibert in the waning moments was just what Dayton needed as the Flyers escaped with an 81-80 victory over the Mastodons of IPFW in the season opener for both programs at UD Arena.
Sibert finished the meeting with 10 points off the bench for the Flyers (1-0), while Dyshawn Pierre tallied a game-high 24 points for the hosts. Also having a strong outing was Khari Price who dropped in 17 points, while Matt Kavanaugh pitched in with seven points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Mastodons (0-1) were paced by Pierre Bland and his 18 points, leading four players in double figures. Before fouling out, Steve Forbes contributed 17 points and five boards, followed by Mo Evans and Isaiah McCray with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Both teams shot the ball well from 3-point range in the first half, but thanks to a slightly better 6-of-11 showing on the perimeter, Dayton was able to take a 44-35 lead into intermission.
In the second half the Flyers backed off their attack on the outside (1-of-2) and while the Mastodons struggled from long range (3-of-13), they were still able to close the gap and take a late lead before Sibert knocked down the game winner.
In a game that featured nine ties, IPFW's 16 turnovers proved to be too great to overcome.Game Notes
