Recap: Portland vs. North Texas
Portland, OR (SportsNetwork.com) - T.J. Taylor came off the bench to score 21 points as the North Texas Mean Green outlasted the Portland Pilots in a double-overtime thriller, 77-72, at the Chiles Center.
Chris Jones stuffed the stat sheet for North Texas (3-3) with 12 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and two steals. Maurice Aniefiok was also impressive in a reserve role with 11 points, while Alzee Williams chipped in 10 points.
For Portland (3-3), Thomas Van Der Mars (21 points, 11 rebounds) and Ryan Nicholas (15 points, 16 rebounds) both posted double-doubles, while Kevin Bailey added 15 points of his own.
Both side were ice-cold in the first half, as neither team made greater than 33 percent of its field goal attempts, but Portland took seven more shots than North Texas in the opening 20 minutes and carried a 28-20 lead into intermission.
The Pilots led by as many as 14 in the second half before North Texas started to chip away, and it climbed all the way back to tie the game with 4:01 left on a three-point play by Williams. Portland surged ahead by two with 1:09 remaining on a Nicholas bucket before Chris Jones tied the game with 16 seconds left on a layup. Portland missed two shots in the final seven seconds and the game went to overtime.
In the first extra session, North Texas never held a lead but kept its deficit within one possession for most of the period until Taylor drilled a jumper with 22 seconds left to tie the game at 63. The Pilots again failed to win the game on their final possession and another overtime was needed.
The Mean Green finally took control in the second overtime with the aid of a 9-2 run.
North Texas made eight 3-point field goals on the night, compared to just three for Portland.Game Notes
