Recap: Akron vs. Marshall

Akron, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Isaiah Johnson tallied 12 points and seven rebounds in just 16 minutes off the bench as the Akron Zips held off the Marshall Thundering Herd for a 59-58 victory in a non-conference matchup at James A. Rhodes Arena.

Pat Forsythe chipped in nine points and six rebounds for Akron (8-5), which also received eight points from Nick Harney. Nine of the 11 Zips that played in the contest contributed in the scoring column.

Ryan Taylor paced Marshall (5-9) with 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field. Kareem Canty, Chris Thomas and TyQuane Goard all scored 10 points. Canty also had five assists and six turnovers in the Thundering Herd's third loss in a row.

Akron took a 31-25 lead into halftime despite shooting just 33.3 percent from the field including a 1-of-9 clip from behind the 3-point line in the opening 20 minutes. Although the Herd hit on 39.1 percent of their field goal tries in the first half, they trailed due to their 13 turnovers and 12 personal fouls.

Taylor scored 14 points in the second half to spearhead Marshall's rally effort. The visitors sank 52 percent of their field goal tries after the intermission, but the Zips grabbed 12 offensive rebounds and attempted four more field goals in the period.

Akron's bench outscored Marshall's reserves, 37-8, in the contest. The Zips also held a 42-29 edge in the rebounding battle.
