Recap: ULM vs. Louisiana
Monroe, LA (SportsNetwork.com) - Tylor Ongwae recorded a double-double with 27 points and 11 rebounds as the ULM Warhawks beat the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns, 103-98, in double overtime to open up Sun Belt Conference play at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
Jayon James also had a double-double for the Warhawks (4-5, 1-0 Sun Belt) with 16 points and 12 boards to go along with five assists. Marvin Williams and Amos Olatayo scored 16 points apiece, with Olatayo adding five blocks. R.J. McCray also chipped in 11 points as the team snapped a four-game losing streak.
Elfrid Payton recorded a rare triple-double for Louisiana (9-5, 0-1) with a career-high 34 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists to go with five steals. Shawn Long had 21 points and six blocks while Steven Wronkoski added 11 points. Louisiana has lost two of its last three games.
ULM held a 34-28 lead at the half thanks to Louisiana's struggles from the field. The Ragin' Cajuns shot a miserable 26.7 percent from the field and 3- of-9 from beyond the arc. The Warhawks made 40.6 of their field goal attempts and 3-of-7 from 3-point range.
The Ragin' Cajuns picked it up in the second half, making 57.1 percent of their shots from the floor. The Warhawks didn't improve much from the first period by making 42.4 percent of shots from the field and 2-of-11 from 3-point range. With three seconds left, Xavian Rimmer made three straight free throws for Louisiana to tie the game at 74-74 and send it to overtime.
After a back-and-forth overtime period, ULM was up by one point with 15 seconds left. Payton made one free throw to tie the score at 85 all. Ongwae missed a 3-point attempt with one second remaining to send it to a second overtime.
With 2:57 remaining in the second overtime, Williams scored in the paint to put ULM up by two. The Warhawks never lost the lead from that point.
ULM did a better job on the glass by outrebounding the Ragin' Cajuns 54-44. The Warhawks dominated inside by outscoring Louisiana 58-38 in the paint.Game Notes
