Recap: Arkansas State vs. Texas State

Jonesboro, AR (SportsNetwork.com) - Ed Townsel scored 20 points, hitting 5- of-9 shooting from the floor as the Arkansas State Red Wolves outlasted the Texas State Bobcats, 73-68, in a Sun Belt Conference showdown at the Convocation Center.

Melvin Johnson III tallied 17 points, and Kirk Van Slyke added 14 points for Arkansas State (16-9, 9-5 SBC). Kendrick Washington and Cameron Golden each chipped in 10 points in the win, which was the fifth in the last six games for the Red Wolves.

Joel Wright netted 19 points to pace Texas State (8-19, 4-10), adding six rebounds to his stat line. Phil Hawkins contributed 18 points in the loss, which was the fourth in the Bobcats' last five games.

Both teams shot well in the first half, with Arkansas State connecting on 52 percent of its tries to take a slight 35-34 lead into the intermission. Texas State hit an even 50 percent of its field goal tries in the frame.

The Red Wolves maintained the scoring pace in the second half, netting 52.9 percent of their shots from the floor, and hitting 18-of-25 from the free- throw line. The Bobcats slipped a bit to 45.5 percent in the period, allowing Arkansas State to create some distance.

The Red Wolves had the edge from the free-throw line, 23-16, and outscored Texas State from 3-point range, 18-12. The Bobcats had the advantage in points in the paint, 36-24.
