Recap: Western Ky vs. Arkansas State
Bowling Green, KY (SportsNetwork.com) - George Fant notched a double-double with 27 points and 14 rebounds, leading the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers to an 82-77 victory in double overtime against the Arkansas State Red Wolves in a Sun Belt Conference matchup at E.A. Diddle Arena.
Fant shot 11-of-18 from the field for the Hilltoppers (11-7, 3-2 Sun Belt), who have won three of their last five. T.J. Price and Chris Harrison-Docks contributed 19 and 13 points, respectively.
Kendrick Washington scored 20 points to lead the Red Wolves (10-7, 3-3), who have lost three of their last four. Brandon Reed (17 points), Kirk Van Slyke (14) and Ed Townsel (10) also reached double figures.
The Red Wolves came out shooting a solid 57.1 percent from the field in the first half. At the other end, the Hilltoppers shot 47.2 percent, but that included two more baskets from beyond the arc, which led to their 40-32 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Hilltoppers struggled, making just eight shots from the field for a 29.6 percent shooting mark. With 1:32 left to play, a Washington layup knotted the game at 64 and, with neither team scoring again in regulation, the game went to overtime.
The first overtime period was evenly matched, though WKU was up by two with 2:18 to play. That margin was erased with two free throws by Kelvin Downs with the clock stopped at 1:30, sending the game to a second overtime.
In the second overtime, the Hilltoppers scored first and never looked back, leading by as many as eight points. The Wolves made just two field goals in both extra sessions.
The Hilltoppers outscored their opponent 22-10 in points off turnovers and 25-4 in second chance points in a back-and-forth game that had nine lead changes.Game Notes
