Recap: Arkansas State vs. Tenn-Martin
Jonesboro, AR (SportsNetwork.com) - Kirk Van Slyke scored a team-best 16 points, leading four players in double figures, as the Arkansas State Red Wolves posted a 72-62 win over the Skyhawks of Tennessee-Martin in a non- conference matchup at the Convocation Center.
Melvin Johnson III tallied 15 points, Cameron Golden 13 and Brandon Reed 10 points for the Red Wolves (2-0), while Kendrick Washington came up a point shy of a double-double as he reeled in a game-high 11 rebounds.
UT Martin (0-3) was paced by Marshun Newell who dropped in a game-high 18 points, but shot only 5-of-19 from the field, while Terence Smith accounted for 16 points and seven rebounds in the losing cause.
The Skyhawks led by as many as five points in the first half, but the team ended up shooting just 35.1 percent from the floor and 1-of-11 behind the 3- point line, en route to a 38-31 deficit at the break.
In the second half the visitors again struggled out on the perimeter (1-of-6), allowing ASU to capture the double-digit win.
UT Martin won the battle of the boards, 47-36, but at the same time suffered 15 turnovers.Game Notes
