Recap: Portland vs. Idaho
Portland, OR (SportsNetwork.com) - Thomas van der Mars posted a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds and was one of five teammates in double- figures, as the Portland Pilots defeated the Idaho Vandals, 88-74, as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at the Chiles Center.
For the Pilots (2-2), Alec Wintering finished with 14 points, Ryan Nicholas added 12 points and Bryce Pressley and Riley Barker each chipped in with 10 points.
Stephen Madison led all scorers with 19 points for the Vandals (2-2).
Portland shot 48.3 percent from the floor in the first half and went into halftime leading 41-31. The Pilots held Idaho to just 37.5 percent shooting in the half, opening the game with a 21-4 run in the first nine minutes of the contest to take command early.
The Vandals continued to struggle from the field after halftime, making only 38.9 percent of their field goal tries, including 4-of-11 from 3-point range. The Pilots shot 44.8 percent from the field in the second and outscored the Vandals 21-11 from the free-throw line in the half. After the Vandals cut their deficit to nine early in the second, the Pilots went on a 15-4 run to go ahead by 20 and the Vandals never challenged again.
The Pilots outscored the Vandals at the free-throw line on the night, 31-15. Portland also finished with a 41-36 rebounding advantage.Game Notes
