Recap: Cal Poly vs. UC Riverside
San Luis Obispo, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Led by a game-high 22 points from Chris Eversley, the Cal Poly Mustangs outlasted the UC Riverside Highlanders, 69-64, in a Big West Conference clash at Mott Gymnasium.
Eversley shot 3-of-4 from 3-point range and 9-of-10 at the free-throw line for Cal Poly (10-16, 6-7 Big West), which had lost six of its previous seven. Michael Bolden and Dave Nwaba scored 13 points apiece for the hosts.
For UCR (8-19, 3-10), losers of five straight, Steven Thornton poured in 21 points on 8-of-9 field goal shooting, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Sam Finley came off the bench to score 16 and Chris Patton tallied 14 points and eight rebounds.
Cal Poly shot just 27.6 percent from the field in the first half, compared to 44.4 percent for UCR, but the Mustangs still took a 29-26 lead into intermission after attempting 11 more field goals than their opponent in the opening 20 minutes.
The Mustangs never surrendered their lead after halftime, going up by as many as 11 down the stretch. The Highlanders brought their deficit to just three in the final minute but could not complete the comeback.
Cal Poly outscored UCR at the free-throw line, 27-16, and it shot 8-of-15 from 3-point range, compared to just 4-of-12 for the Highlanders.Game Notes
