Recap: San Diego St vs. Coll of Charleston
Fullerton, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Winston Shepard scored a game-high 15 points, leading four players in double figures, as the San Diego State Aztecs picked up a 72-52 win over the College of Charleston Cougars in the first round of the Wooden Legacy at Titan Gym.
Also scoring in double figures for the Aztecs (3-1) were Matt Shrigley with 12 points off the bench, Xavier Thames 11 and JJ O'Brien 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor.
With the victory the Aztecs will now face off against the winner of the Creighton/Arizona battle on Friday, for the right to compete in the title game of the tournament on Sunday.
The Cougars (2-4) failed to have a single player score in double figures as the fell for the fourth time in the last five outings. Adjehi Baru tallied eight points, shooting only 2-of-7 from the field, while Joe Chealey and Terrance O'Donohue pitched in with seven points apiece.
SDSU opened the contest on 17-1 run and never looked back, shooting 56.0 percent from the floor and 5-of-9 beyond the arc in the first half, en route to a 37-21 edge at the break
Charleston, which shot a mere 30.8 percent from the field and 1-of-8 on the perimeter, was held without a field goal until the 13:20 mark of the period.
Leading by as many as 25 with just under eight minutes remaining in the contest, the Aztecs converted 59.1 percent from the floor in the second half in order to cruise to the win.
The Cougars finished the meeting hitting on only 33.3 percent from the field and 4-of-16 on the perimeter.Game Notes
