Recap: George Mason vs. Penn
Fairfax, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - Bryon Allen scored 24 points for the George Mason Patriots as they held on to beat the Penn Quakers, 80-77, in a non- conference game at the Patriot Center.
The Patriots (7-6) received some help from their bench in the contest. Jalen Jenkins had 10 points and led the team in rebounding with six, and Patrick Holloway tallied 18 points while making 4-of-7 tries from behind the 3-point line.
Tony Hicks led the Quakers (2-9) with 23 points, six assists and three steals. Fran Dougherty scored 17 while collecting nine rebounds and Miles Jackson- Cartwright had just seven field goal attempts but scored 16.
Penn held an early 18-8 lead, but a 10-4 Patriot run over the final 3:38 of the half had the lead cut to two, at 41-39, as the game progressed into the intermission. The Quakers shot 63 percent from the floor in the first half compared to 46.4 by the Patriots.
The game was tied at 53 in the second half before a Holloway 3-pointer started a 17-6 run that seemingly put the game away. The Quakers would threaten late, however as the Patriots poor free-throw shooting down the stretch opened the door for a possible late comeback. Hicks made a 3-pointer to bring the Quakers to within three with 12 seconds left, and he had an opportunity to make another with just a second remaining after Johnny Williams missed two free- throws for the Patriots.
The Patriots shot just 3-of-8 from the free-throw line over the final 1:24, with Allen going 2-of-2 during that span. GMU held a 36-30 edge in the rebounding battle in the contest.Game Notes
