In one of the oldest rivalries in the nation, Columbia leads the all-time series against Cornell, 122-98. The Lions have won four of the last six against the Big Red.
Cornell's win over Oberlin College didn't just help the Big Red gain their first win of the season, but it snapped a 19-game losing streak dating back to last year. Ned Tomic scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds while blocking three shots to lead Cornell. Tomic hit 9-of-13 from the floor in the contest. Nolan Cressler contributed 12 points, while Devin Cherry added 10 points, six rebounds and seven assists. The Big Red shot 50.8 percent from the floor.
Cressler is the team's leading scorer this season with a 16.5 ppg average on 41.6 percent shooting. Cherry is second at 10.6 ppg, and leads the team with 49 assists on the year. Dwight Tarwater tops the team in rebounding with 6.4 rpg. The Big Red average 66.2 ppg, but give up over 80 points per contest to their opposition.
Columbia used the long ball to take control and ultimately defeat Central Pennsylvania in its last matchup. The Lions connected on 18 3-pointers to down CPU, 104-78. Maodo Lo netted 23 points to lead Columbia on 7-of-11 shooting, which was all from behind the 3-point arc. Grant Mullins scored 20 points and dished out six assists, while Alex Rosenberg chipped in 19 points and four assists. Columbia shot 52.1 percent from the floor in the game.
Lo, Rosenberg and Mullins are all within one point of each other for the team lead in scoring this season. Lo paces the Lions with 13.9 ppg, while Rosenberg hits 13.5 ppg and Mullins adds 12.9 per contest. Lo is shooting an impressive 50.9 percent from the field through the first 17 games. Isaac Cohen leads the team in both rebounding (5.8 rpg) and total assists (45) on the year. The Lions average 70 ppg.
Cornell has gone from an elite Ivy League team to the basement in only a few years. The Big Red may be able to turn things around in Ivy League play in hopes of a tournament berth, but defensively there's a lot of work needed.
