Recap: St Johns vs. Monmouth
Queens, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Phil Greene scored a game-high 22 points and pulled down eight rebounds as the St. John's Red Storm captured a 64-54 win over the Monmouth Hawks in a non-conference battle at Carnesecca Arena.
Also scoring in double figures for the Red Storm (3-1) were D'Angelo Harrison and JaKarr Sampson with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Sampson also pulled down a team-best nine rebounds.
The Hawks (1-3) were led by Justin Robinson with 15 points on 6-of-17 shooting from the field. Tyrone O'Garro cleared a game-high 12 rebounds.
Both teams shot under 37 percent from the field in the first half, but Monmouth also missed all six chances behind the 3-point line in the period, en route to a 28-26 deficit at the break.
In the second half St. John's pulled away with an impressive 59.1 percent shooting from the floor, including 4-of-7 beyond the arc.
The Red Storm overcame 15 turnovers by limiting the visitors to just 33.9 percent from the field and 2-of-18 out on the perimeter.Game Notes
