Recap: Rutgers vs. Yale
Piscataway, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) -Kadeem Jack sank a pair of free throws with 14 seconds remaining to lift the Rutgers Scarlet Knights to a 72-71 win over the Yale Bulldogs in a non-conference thriller at The RAC.
Jack finished with a team-high 18 points and also grabbed eight rebounds for Rutgers (2-1), which also received 17 points courtesy of Myles Mack. Malick Kone gave the Scarlet Knights a spark off the bench with 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor and J.J. Moore added 10 points.
Javier Duren paced Yale (1-2) with a game-high 22 points. Justin Sears chipped in 12 points, Armani Cotton scored 11 points and Brandon Sherrod chipped in 10 for the Bulldogs.
Neither side could establish a lasting lead in the first half as the lead changed hands 10 times and the score was tied on nine occasions. Yale took a 37-34 lead into halftime after it shot 53.8 percent from the field including a 5-of-10 clip from beyond the arc in the opening period. Rutgers made only 39.3 percent of its shots from the floor in the first half, but stayed within striking distance by converting 11-of-14 tries at the charity stripe.
Duren made a jumper to extend the Bulldogs' lead to five at the start of the second half and the visitors stayed in front until Moore sank a 3-pointer with 30 seconds left in regulation to give Rutgers a 70-69 advantage. Cotton made a pair of free throws to put Yale back in front before Jack's go-ahead free shots gave the Scarlet Knights the final points of the contest. The Bulldogs were unable to respond as Victor Nick missed a jumper just before the buzzer. Rutgers outscored the Bulldogs, 16-10, over the final 20 minutes to rally back for the win.
The Scarlet Knights enjoyed a 37-29 edge in the rebounding battle which helped them outscore Yale, 22-8, in second chance points.Game Notes
