Recap: Stanford vs. Northwestern
Stanford, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Josh Huestis finished with 18 points and seven rebounds as the Stanford Cardinals defeated the Northwestern Wildcats, 71-58, in a non-conference bout at Maples Pavilion.
Chasson Randle added 14 points for Stanford (2-1) while Anthony Brown scored 12 points and grabbed eight boards. Stefan Nastic chipped in 11 points and blocked two shots.
Northwestern (1-1) suffered its first loss of the season despite a strong performance by JerShonn Cobb, who went 6-of-10 from the field en route to a game-high 19 points. Drew Crawford finished with 15 points and Tre Demps tallied 10 points.
The Wildcats played well in the early stages of the contest and took a 25-20 lead with 7:13 remaining in the opening half. Stanford battled back from the deficit as it outscored the visitors, 9-2, to take a 29-27 advantage with just under two minutes before the intermission. The Cardinal took the two-point lead into the break after neither side managed to score again in the first half. Northwestern knocked down 4-of-9 attempts from beyond the arc while limiting the hosts to 11-of-24 shooting from the field in the opening 20 minutes of action.
Stanford pulled away in the second stanza as it connected on 56.5 percent of its field goal attempts and converted 13-of-16 at the free-throw line. The Wildcats made only 33.3 percent of their shots from the floor in the second period.
The Cardinal outscored Northwestern, 26-16, in the paint and also, 18-6, at the free-throw line in the contest.Game Notes
