Recap: Minnesota vs. Nebraska Omaha
Minneapolis, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - DeAndre Mathieu scored 27 points, shooting 9-of-11 from the floor, as the Minnesota Golden Gophers posted a 92-79 win over the Mavericks of Nebraska Omaha in a non-conference bout at Williams Arena.
Also scoring in double figures for the Golden Gophers (10-2) was Malik Smith with 19 points off the bench as he converted 5-of-8 behind the 3-point line. Andre Hollins logged a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Austin Hollins and Elliott Eliason with 10 points apiece, the latter also clearing nine boards and making four steals.
The Mavericks (8-4) were paced by Devin Patterson, CJ Carter and Alex Phillips with 15 points apiece, followed by Marcus Tyus with 11 as the team had a five- game win streak snapped.
A close game throughout, the Mavericks made just four field goals from inside the 3-point line over the first 20 minutes. A triple by Omaha's Caleb Steffensmeier with time winding down in the period knotted the score at 44-44 at the break.
The 10 3-pointers registered by Omaha in the first half were the most permitted by the Gophers in any one game this season.
After lighting up the scoreboard from the perimeter in the first half, the Mavericks ended up missing all eight chances from the outside after intermission, allowing Minnesota to assume control and pull out the double- digit win.
Andre Hollins scored the 1,000th point in his career with a pair of free throws at the 8:17 mark of the first half. He's the 38th player in program history to reach that plateau.
Minnesota, which has now won five games in a row, entered the night having won 23 straight home games in the month of December.Game Notes
